Spiral Living Center Schedule of workshops 2007

Our theme this year is food related- growing, processing, etc. So dust off your gloves and get ready to make your garden more productive! Class size is limited, please call 592-3642 to register. Work trade can be arranged before the classes. All classes held in the I.V., locations given on registration. You can become a member of Spiral Living Center for $20/year and receive $10 off each workshop.

Extending the Frost-Free Season using Hoop Houses with Jerry Lapora Saturday, April 14, 11am-4pm $25 Explore inexpensive ways to protect precious fruit and vegetable plants from frost. Hoop houses allow you to start plants such as melons, tomatoes and peppers earlier in the spring, and harvest later in the Fall. See examples of frost protection, and learn how to use materials such as clear plastic, remay, heaters, fans and black plastic mulch. We will even construct a hoop house! Hoop house plan, material and retailer lists provided.

Jerry Lapora has a B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from Oregon State University. He owns and operates Melonhead Farms with his family, and serves on the board of the Spiral Living Center.

Secrets of Irrigation with Steve Orr Saturday, May 5, 12pm-4pm $20 Tired of dragging that hose around? Learn the basics of irrigation design and maintenance. We will survey the various types of small-scale irrigation systems for field crops, gardens and greenhouses. Discuss design considerations and practice installing irrigation equipment. Followed by a Cinco de Mayo Celebration potluck at Frog Farm. Bring your salsa shoes and guitar!

Steve Orr has designed and installed edible and medicinal permaculture gardens for twenty-five years. He manages Siskiyou Mountain Herbs with Deb on the Frog Farm and is on the Spiral Living Center board.

Beginning Beekeeping with Joy McEwen Saturday, June 2, 10am-2pm $20 Explore the world of beekeeping. Learn about the hive and its members, basic hive management, equipment needed and other essentials. You’ll even don a bee suit and look into an active hive.

Joy McEwen is a beekeeper and agricultural enthusiast. She operates Diggin' Livin' Farm and Apiary with her husband Eric. Joy, president of the Spiral Living Center board, earned a M.S. in Environmental Sciences from OSU. She managed a youth farm and wrote her thesis about introducing local healthy food into local school food programs.

Planting Tomatoes and Basil for Sauce and Salsa Saturday, June 9, 10-1pm $15 Grow lots of delicious tomatoes and basil in small spaces. Learn the many tricks of encouraging fruit production and how to protect your plants through companion planting, sheet mulching and hoop houses. We will also discuss heirloom varieties and seed saving. This will be a hands-on class, so bring your gloves!

Bicycle Tour of Takilma Gardens with Sarah Kuhn Saturday, August 4, 9am-3pm with a river break $20 Come bike with us through the Takilma countryside and visit some of the longest established and most productive gardens in town. Get gardening tips from local long-term gardeners. Enjoy garden treats and a dip in the beautiful Illinois River as we practice carbon neutrality.

Sarah Kuhn lives at the Magic Forest Farm in Takilma where they grow and preserve most of their produce, live simply, and strive for more meaningful connections to each other and the land. She is a local youth educator and mother.

Putting Up Food for Winter with Meadow Martell Sunday, September 30, 10am-4pm $30 Your garden is giving you more food than you can possibly eat, so what is one to do? Can, dry or freeze it! Learn proper canning practices including: preparing fresh foods, hot packing, adding acids, and processing jars. Though we’ll focus on canning, we’ll also demonstrate freezing and drying techniques. Meadow Martell has been canning and preserving foods for more than 30 years. She has won many blue ribbons at the Lane and Douglas County Fairs.

Future workshops (no dates set currently, but please let us know if you are interested):

  • Skinning, de-boning and butchering deer
  • Gardening by the lunar calendar
  • Seed saving
  • Raising chickens for eggs and/or meat
  • Fruit tree pruning (winter 07-08)
  • Maintaining or repairing garden tools and equipment
  • Children’s gardening series
  • Brew your own compost and compost/manure tea

The Spiral Living Center is a new non-profit in the Illinois Valley. Our goal is to empower our community to achieve self-sufficiency.
